Hidegség (in Croatian Vedein) is a village in
Gyor-Moson-Sopron county, Hungary near the Lake Ferto.
Neighbouring settlements are: Sopron city, Fertoboz, Nagycenk,
Pereszteg and Fertohomok villages. The settlement has got 304
inhabitants (28.2% Croatian, 7.9% German by "used language
with friends and at home". Only 2.6% are Croatian and 0.6%
are Germans by ethnicity; 2001 census).
The first mention of the settlement is from 1274 as 'HYDEGSYD ' -
see the coat of arms. The settlement was a village in Sopron county of
Hungary till 1950. From 1950 it is in Gyor-Sopron, 1989
Gyor-Moson-Sopron county.
The village was devastated in the early 1500s and resettled in
1532-1534 by Croats. In 1704 - at the time of the Prince Rákóczi's
war of independent - the settlement devasteted again and
resettled with Croats from Szerém (in Croatian: Srijem) county.
The settlement's Croatian name is VEDEIN - see the CoA. The
Coat of Arms and the flags was adopted on 16th June 2000.
