From zalaegerszeg
site:
Egerszeg had no official arms for centuries. The arms with the
patron saint of the parish-church, Maria Magdalen, developed from
the city seal which was modified several times at the beginning
of our century. These arms were used in several versions up until
the end of the 40-s. The new arms were designed and accepted by
the town-councillors in 1970, however, experts held the opinion
that these arms were neither in accordance with the rules of
heraldry nor the traditions of the city.
It was in 1989 when the City Council decided to design the arms
in accordance with traditions. The new symbol of Zalaegerszeg was
accepted in 1992 by the new managing body of the city as a result
of long-lasting debates.
The traditional escutcheon features Maria Magdalen with a whip
under her feet reaching out her right hand with a laurel wreath
to the stylized castle.
