Description

Bat Yam (meaning daughter of the sea) is situated alongside the sea shore, south to Tel Aviv-Jaffa and west to Hulon. Est. 1926 as Bayit VaGan (meaning home and garden) and changed its name in 1938 when proclaimed as Local Council. It was upgraded to Municipality in 1958. 150,000 inh. The flag on the city hall is blue with a blue emblem on a white circle. (At the city hall I also spotted the flag of Bat-Yam's Educational Pupils' Council.)

Mrs Hana Kadosh, city spokeswoman assistant, sent me a pile of information including a booklet Bat-Yam - Information about the city, issued by the City Spokeswoman, October 1999, in which I found (my translation):

City Emblem: It tells about the character of the city. The background is a shield ending in wall-towers and its colour is light blue. Inside the background, a white sailboat represents resort and tourism. Blue waves tell that Bat-Yam is situated near a sea shore. Above the shield, a cogwheel in brown shade, reminding the industry and craftmanship in the city. The emblem is decorated with a green ribbon which in its center there is the name of the city and 6 golden stars beside it, for the six days of the Genesis. The emblem was designed by the late Ze'ev Pevsner, who was Bat-Yam Local Council's engineer. The emblem got an official and protected status in 1950.

The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot, Yalkut ha-Pirsumim), YP 633, 13 November 1958 — maybe it was 'adopted' by the city in 1950. Note the above description concerns the natural colours of the emblem, which in the flag appears as all blue.

The official website have a nice image of the emblem and information which is basically the same as above beside two points:
- The year of adoption in corrected to 1959 (and not 1950 as in the booklet but still wrong. The correct year is 1958).
- Name of the designer is Shvezner (and not Pevsner).
