Petit Larousse Illustré says that Tiberias (in French, Tibériade), was founded in year 18 AD, on the shore of the Lake of Genesareth, also called Lake of Tiberias or Sea of Galilee. After the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, Tiberias became an important center of the Jewish national and intellectual life. Modern Tiberias is located slightly north of the ancient city. Tiberius Julius Caesar was emperor from 14 to 37.

Ivan Sache suggested, I guess Genesareth is an approximate rendition of Kinnereth. Not so, Gennosar is a name of another ancient city on the lake shore not far from today Kibbutz Gennosar, north to Tiberias.

Around 20 A.D, Herod Antipas, the son of the infamous King Herod, decided to build a new city in honor of his friend Tiberius Julius Caesar and named it Teberias. Later it replace Jerusalem as the Jewish center, and the Jerusalem Talmud was written in Tiberias. The town survived wars, change of governments and earthquakes (last one in 1837 ruined all the town). Tiberias old city (and today city center) are situated about 200 meters below sea level.
