International Skating Union (ISU)

The International Skating Union (ISU) was established in 1892. It covers several types of skating:

  • Short Track Speed Skating
  • Speed Skating

Description of the ISU flag

The flag of the ISU was hoisted over the skating hall during the European Championships of Figure Skating, which took place this week in Bratislava (Slovakia). It is a blue field with the 'logo' of the ISU in the middle. The 'logo' is in fact the white letters ISU, as they can be see on the ISU Web page, put on a light blue map of the world with a few parallels and meridians in white. I have not been able to see the 'logo' accurately because the cameras, understandably, followed the skaters rather than focusing on the ISU flag.

The ISU (The International Skating Union) is the international governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, including figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. It was founded in Scheveningen, The Netherlands in 1892, making it one of the oldest international sport federations. The ISU was formed to establish standardized international rules and regulations for the skating disciplines it governs, and to organize international competitions in these disciplines. It is now based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

I have seen the ISU flag (in person and on TV) at numerous skating events. The flag never included the meridians and parallels on the "globe", and their current logo seems to have eliminated them altogether.
The logo can be seen either blue on white or white on blue. The flag has white letters, on a blue circle, bordered white, on a blue flag.
The flag seems to be made to suit local proportions, e.g. 1:2 in Canada, 4:1 in Switzerland. I have enclosed my drawings of these two versions.

Flag used at Vancouver Olympics

At the Vancouver Olympics, the ISU flags inside are definitely 2:3. The ISU flag has a very large white logo rotated to hang vertically.
