I would like to report a new Italian political flag, belonging
to the coalition called La Sinistra · l'Arcobaleno (or Sinistra
Arcobaleno in short), which comes in two versions.
The coalition was officially formed on December 8-9, 2007. It
includes four parties of the left wing, namely:
Partito della Rifondazione Comunista
(Communist Refoundation Party),
Partito dei Comunisti Italiani (Party of Italian Communists),
Partito Democratico della Sinistra (Democratic
Left),
Federazione dei Verdi
(the Greens).
I first saw the new flag in March 2008, during the campaign for
the forthcoming political elections (April 13-14, 2008). It
measures 140 x 100 cm, with a round logo (diameter: 85 cm) on
either a red background (red version) or green background (green
version). The reason of the double version is that the new
coalition groups together parties whose traditional reference
colour is red (PRF, PdCI, SD) and green (Greens).
The logo of the coalition is identical in both versions: it
features the word Sinistra ("Left") in red
letters (the typeface or font used is Helvetica bold), with the
article la ("the") above its letter n (in non-bold
letters) and the word l'Arcobaleno (The Rainbow) below, in green
letters (same typeface but smaller in size). In the lower half of
the logo are seven irregular brush strokes, whose length
decreases towards the bottom, in the same colours of the 'Flag of Peace', but in reversed order,
i.e. (from top to bottom) red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue,
purple. The background of the logo is white. The logo can be seen
in the coalition's own website: <www.sinistrarcobaleno.it>.
