Bolzano Flag

Bolzano flag appeared in Vexilla Italica 1-23 (1996) but it is unofficial (as far as I know). Bolzano flag is white over red with shield in center.

Fascist period variant - The reason for the variant may well be the five-pointed star association with the unity of Italy ("La Gran Stella d'Italia", even if it should be pointing down), and could be (yet another) attempt to italianise this region recently annexed from Austria. On the other hand it could be plain anti-semitism, due to the six-pointed star association with the Jewish star of David.
