Duchy of Guastalla

The Duchy of Guastalla was created by Napoleon 30 March 1806 and transferred to his sister Paulina Bonaparte and her husband, Prince Borghese. Paulina returned the duchy to Napoleon on 24 May 1806 and it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. Only the French flag is known to be used.

The Duchy of Guastalla was not created in 1806 as stated above. From 1575 to 1746, Guastalla was a sovereign duchy ruled by the Gonzaga family. In 1746 it passed to the Dukes of Parma, who were also styled Dukes of Guastalla. The 'creation' of the duchy for Pauline Bonaparte was a temporary separation of the titles. Guastalla reverted to Parma in 1814 but in 1847 the Duke of Modena became Duke of Guastalla.
