The city emblem was adopted on Nov 1st 2005 by Notice No 246 but there is no flag law. The white flag has a green and a blue two color city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized S of Sakata. The green color stands for Shonai Plain field and Mt.Chokai,the blue color for Nihon Sea, the four lines for Mogami River and the merged one city and three towns which make a leap forward to the future.

The flag of the former town of Matsuyama was green with mark. The town is now, from 2005, part of the city of Sakata.
