The city emblem was adopted on Dec 28th 1962 by Notice No 73 but there is no flag law. The white flag has a red city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized hiragana そ So of Soma. The fan shape symbolizes the future of the city, the upper part wings do a saltation, the center ship does a development of Port Soma, the lower part outer circle does a public welfare and a solidarity of the citizen and the inner circle does a consciousness of the responsibility for an urban development with a collaboration. it represents a wish for a promotion and a development of Port Soma and the neighboring coastal industry and an ambition to become a modern industrial city.
