The city emblem was adopted on Oct 15th 1954 but there is no flag law. The purple flag has a white city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized hiragana くさつ Kusatsu. The heavy lines symbolize the vigor of the city. When turning the flag by 90 degree, the emblem indicates the city is located in the center of Japan.
