The city emblem was adopted on Oct 1st 2005 by Notice No 1 but there is no flag law.
The white flag has a green, a blue and an orange three color city emblem in the center.
The city emblem is a stylized U of Unzen.
The green color stands for the ground and the blessed city, the blue color for the sky
and the sea and the orange color for the sun.
It represents an image of the powerful city which is built by an abundant ground,
the bright sea and the people coming in contact with.

Azuma 東村 means Eastern Village. Now they use the kanji of 東 for Azuma however
it seems that the word Azuma originated from a legend of Yamato Takeru legendary
prince born in year 72.
He was sent by Emperor to crush the great rebellion in eastern land whose people
disobeyed the imperial court and on way back from eastern land he stayed in
presently Gunma and commemorated his late wife. He said "Oh my wife =
Azuma haya" in ancient Japanese. Azuma can write as 吾妻 = "my wife" and we can find
the municipal name here.
