The town emblem was adopted in 1822 and the flag was adopted in 1979. The green flag has a white and a yellow flag emblem which is different from the town emblem. The green color stands for the town nature, the white letter AYA for Minamimata, Kitamata and Iino three districts of the town and the Y for River Aya.

Most of Japanese municipalities use their emblem in the municipal flag however 13 municipalities don't use the emblem but specially designed charge in the flag.
The town emblem was adopted in 1822. The town emblem is a stylized kanji 綾 Aya in a circle form.
