Buan is located in the southeastern part of the Byeonsan peninsula with its western end bulged to the Yellow Sea. Its longitude and latitude lies in N35Ëš8Â'/ E126Ëš8 and 126Ëš55.

Its east borders with Jungeup-gun, the west borders with Gimje-city based on the mouth of Dongjingang river, and the south end is close to Gochang-gun based on Gomso-man.

The west side of Buan is the Yellow Sea, and has many islands such as Wido, Sikdo, JungKum, Georyundo, Sangwangdengdo and Hawangdeungdo.
