The symbols (coat of arms, flag and anthem) of Kočani were adopted by the Municipal Council on 29 January 2010. The flag and arms were designed by Stojance Velickovski, member of the Macedonian Heraldic Society.
The flag was selected in a two-staged public contest. Seven proposals
were submitted, of which a jury short-listed three proposals that were
presented to the public by the municipal administration.
Proposal 1, eventually accepted, is red with two thin yellow stripes
near the top and bottom of the flag and a symbol in the middle, made
of a yellow disc with three red waves, flanked by two yellow spikes.
The flag is derived from the arms (assuming that the adopted arms
matched those proposed), which are yellow with six red spikes (3 + 2 +
1) and seven red waves (2 + 3 + 2), and a chief similar to the central
part of the flag.
Proposal 2 is vertically divided white-yellow, with two additional
thin vertical white stripes in the yellow part, and a miniaturized
Macedonian flag in the upper right corner.
Proposal 3 has at fly a schematized version of the Macedonian flag and
at hoist a white rectangle bordered in yellow and "entering" the fly
part as a triangle, charged with the matching coat of arms' proposal.
The proposed coat of arms is red with a crenelated yellow border
charged with 10 red disks; in the middle a goose wearing a yellow
ribbon and holding a plant (yellow stem and leaves, white flowers) in
her beak.
