Apeldoorn is a municipality in Gelderland province, with its seat in
the village of Apeldoorn, the second largest village in the Netherlands
after 's-Gravenhage.
Flag: A vertical white hoist charged with the municipal arms, and two
horizontal stripes of equal width of red and yellow.
Adopted 30 Jun 1966 by municipal resolution; design: unknown.
The arms is from the van Apeldoorn or Appelthorn family, extinct in
the 18th century, which had a few possessions in the area. Note that the
arms on flag and Coat of Arms are different: on the flag the eagle is armed azure,
while on the Coat of Arms it has red feet with blue nails.

According to "Wie, Wat, Waar? 1940", an annual published by the
Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad in Nov. 1939, the flag of Apeldoorn was: horizontal
yellow - red.

This footballclub will join the professional ranks next year, and on
TV I saw the proud flag wappering in Apeldoorn (Gelderland). In case you're
curious about the blue color: it used to be the "Apeldoornse Geheel Onthouders
Voetbal Vereniging" (Teatotalers FC), now it's "Alleen Gezamenlijk Oefenen
Voert Verder" (only common training leads further), see its
homepage. Inscription: Opgericht 25-2-1913 (Founded 25 Feb 1913)
