Duiven municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 26.043; area: 35,15 km². Settlements:
Duiven (seat), Groessen, Loo.
Duiven is just outside Arnhem, southeast of it. The names could be
translated 'Pigeons' - Etymologically the name is related to 'dune' (Dutch:
duin). An old folkloristic custom here was 'vendelzwaaien'
- bannerthrowing. I don't know whether that has survived.
The flag was adopted 25 June 1954. The colors were derived from the
municipal Coat of Arms.
