[sie62] Sierksma 1962 gives a version
with (only) 11 stripes red-white-blue-red-blue-yellow-green-white-red-white-blue.
Mark Sensen, 16 November 1996
A variant of the fifteen-stripe version is shown in Flaggen aller
seefahrenden nationen by John W. Norrie and J.S. Hobbs, Edition Maritim
(Hamburg, 1987). I believe that was based on an 1848 Admiralty Flag Chart.
It shows a flag of Terschelling and Vlieland which is the same as the above
fifteen stripe flag taken from the Delisle atlas except the fifth stipe
from the top is blue instead of red.
E. Smith, 4 May 1998
Old flag charts show flags with 10 to 16 horizontal stripes, but the
three stripes at the top and the three at the bottom are always red, white
and blue. The other stripes are in the colours of Vlieland
(green and white) and Terschelling (red, blue
and yellow).
