Rotterdam diocese (provisional flag)
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rotterdam will celebrate in 2006 its 50 years
of existence. By Royal Resolution a coat of arms and flag was granted to
the diocese; the arms will adorn its letters from 7 Jul 2004 on.
The shield consists of a green cross on a silver field, with in the
first quarter a red grill. The grill is the symbol of St. Lawrence, who
died as a martyr in a fiery demonstration of his Christian belief. St.
Lawrence is the patron saint of the city of Rotterdam, which has green
in its city-colors. He is also the patron saint of the cathedral church
and of the diocese as a whole.
The diocese of Rotterdam has also had a new flag designed in the same
colors as the shield of the coat of arms. By arms and flag the diocese
demonstrates its own, official identity. After half a century it can no
longer be considered a heritage of the diocese of Haarlem, to which it
belonged until 1956.

reported by Hans van Heijningen. who observed:
The colors of Rotterdam are green - white
- green - the colors were reversed, because the diocese of Groningen
does have already the white cross on green (a reversal of the city-colors).
The design was by Mr. Daae.
