O. Tønnevold, Grimstad - blue swallowtail, white
"T".
Jarig Bakker, 11 February 2005
We see a blue swallowtail bearing a white serifed
initial "T", the source being Wedge, F.J.N.; Brown's Flags and Funnels of
British and Foreign Steamship Companies; 1926 [wed26] . A slightly later
appearance is Flaggenbuch Teil II (Fla. B. II) [d9e28]

O. T. Tønnevold AS of Grimstad nowadays the firm
uses a rectangular flag and an initial without serifs:

This family business founded by O.T. Tønnevold in 1875 flew the swallowtail on
ships like ‘Siam’ operated 1908-1923:

Tanker business developed but during WWII a split occurred resulting in two
Tønnevold firms reunited, finally, in 1990. Currently container ships are
operated as well, moreover OTT has diversified into property and technology
investments. Oddly, the ‘Fleet’ section under ‘Shipping’ (upper menu) lists only
one unsold ship, sailing under the British flag.
The two house flags are shown by
skipet.no
without chronological reference (and no serifs).

The Odd Godager & Company was headquartered in Oslo, Norway. This version of their flag was shown by Brown in both the 1971 and 1978 editions.

The Odd Godager & Company flag is also shown with a white field and letter, but whether this version is correct is questionable. It may have been taken from Brown (1958) which shows the white variant, while at the same time indicating in their notes that this is incorrect and the white should be yellow. The U.S. Navy Merchant Marine House Flags and Stack Insignia (1961) also shows the white version.

Formed 1987 by the amalgamation of D/S Vesteraalens
and A/S Ofotens D/S and in 1989 absorbed Nord-Ferjer A/S. Brown 1995 [4]

Ofotens og Vesterålens Dampskibsselskab ASA (Norwegian Shipping Company). Of
the 1st two flags shown under this title, the first by Jorge can be confirmed as
an actual flag being flown by ships in photos dated 1995 and 2005. The 2nd
version by Jarig from Brown 1995 therefore either predates it or it has been
mistakenly recorded being thought to be in line with the funnel markings where
the main red band with diamond and "O" is edged top and bottom by narrow white
bands. Usually one would expect the funnel design to be the same as the flag but
in this case apparently not [unless changed].

Description of flag: It is red flag with a white stripe at the top and bottom edge. In the red field
is a white lozenge with a black capital "O".

Ofotens Dampskipsselskap. Although no source is given for this, by the date I
suspect that it is also sourced from the Hamburg Exhibition about Hurtigruten
which would then give it authenticity although having the "O" black instead of a
dark blue is somewhat surprising in getting away from the Norwegian colours. The
only portrayal that I can find for the company is from
http://www.skipet.no
which shows only the one flag for Ofotens D/S A/S 1912-1987 and then Ofotens
Vesteraalens D/S A/S 1988-2006 [after which it merged into the new Hurtigruten
Group ASA] and that is the 1st version above as shown by Jorge for Ofotens og
Vesterålens Dampskisselskab ASA.
