Quoting Sean Gillespie, The Southland Times, 20 August 2008:
The Southland District Council is considering a new flag for Riverton, thanks to the efforts of Riverton Primary School's room 7. Nine-year-old Reeny Souness spoke to the Riverton Community Board on behalf of her 20 classmates on Monday night, saying it should absolutely have a flag immediately...
Reeny's class had designed flags for the seaside town as part of a history exercise mixed with a screen-printing workshop. The rest of the school had also designed flag but it was room 7 pupils, under the guidance of teacher Katie Pennicott, who had sent their designs and accompanying letters to the council.
Ms Pennicott said the council was very receptive and she thought they had a pretty good chance of getting a flag...
A council staff member costed 10 flags at about $2250. Riverton Community Board chairman Blair Stewart said the board agreed the town should have a flag. The town would have a flag, but the design for it had yet to be chosen he said.

The Southland
Times reported on 9 December 2008 that a flag was
adopted for the town. After room seven at Riverton Primary School convinced the Community
Board that the town should have a flag, their ideas were pooled to
form a flag featuring Riverton's giant paua shell and a whale's tail.
The flag will be flown from the Riverton Focal Point, where it was
first raised in a ceremony on 8 December 2008.
