Żmigród is in Trzebnica county, c. 40 km north of Wrocław. German name: Trachenberg/Schmiegrode. Flag adopted: 1996.

Legend has it that Żmigród derives its name from a basilisk or a cruel dragon that tormented residents of the town. The beast was believed to have lived in the vicinity of a local parish church, where a water tower is located today.
