famous because so many men and women were called Maria. An old
name for the pueblo was 'Parroquia del Dulce Nombre de Maria'.

tree and thus used as a canting symbol. The monogram is again a
symbol for the St. Mary. The chain in the bordure is a symbol for
the Lares uprising of 1868 against the Spanish occupation."
