About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Vert superimposed by a sperm whale Or, issuant from base a castle Argent masoned Sable with windows Gules, in central chief a cross of the Order of Christ fimbriated Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "S. MATEUS DA CALHETA".
Meaning:
The base wavy is due to the green colour alluding to the Atlantic. The sperm whale is alluding to the tradition of whaling, the castle probably is the local fort of São João, the cross is alluding to the Knights of the Order of Christ.
