About the Flag

The flag is a gyronny of purple over dark yellow (in my sources; plain yellow most likely in the official text) with a typical coat of arms in the centre (city rank).

Coat of arms

The coat of arms has a 5-towered mural crown (city rank), a scroll reading "CIDADE DE ALMEIRIM" and a very busy shield. This is vertically divided in 3 equal stripes of gold black and gold, the golden stripes are charged with purple grapes above and below a red horn (similar to the ones usually associated with post services), and the black stripe is charged with something in gold I can’t identify above, charged with a quina, a golden heraldic eagle in the centre and 3 wavy lines in silver-blue-silver below.
Meaning:
Trying to guess the meaning of the charges, I’d say that the wavy lines stand for the river, the grapes for the fertility of the fields and the main culture there, the horns may reflect one of the origins of the city.
Jorge Candeias, 10 June 1998

Almeirim was uppgraded and made seat of a municipality on 16 August 1991

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Presentation of Almeirim

Almeirim is a city that belongs to the district of Santarém, old province of Ribatejo, future eventual region of Ribatejo e Oeste. It is very near Santarém, 7 km across the river Tejo and a few fields in a fertile area. The municipality has 222 km² and over 21 000 inhabitants (21 778 as of 2000, census data) in only 4 communes.
Jorge Candeias, 10 Jun 1998
