It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a blue over yellow gyronny field (city rank).

The arms are gules, a castle or with port and windows azure, charged in its main tower with the arms of King Sancho I, revised, (a cross of five eschuteons azure, the lateral ones pointing inwards and the central downwards, each charged with a saltire of five bezants argent), under a row of five five-point stars or; mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank); collar of the Tower and Sword Order; white scroll at the bottom reading in black uppercase sans serif "CIDADE DE BRAGANÇA".
