It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field (village rank).

The arms are Azure a rose Or seeded Gules between to ears of rye Or set in pale and issuant from a base wavy Argent charged with a fess wavy Azure a bridge Argent masoned Sable. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CALVÃO - CHAVES".

Calvão Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Chaves Municipality (q.v.); it had 450 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 19,64 km².
