The coat of arms is Or, a rose Gules between two ogival inescutcheons Azure charged with 11 plates in 3:2:3:2:1, all entangled in two vines, one fruited Or and the other Purpure, both leaved Vert. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DO CARTAXO". Meaning:
The central rose is symbolizing the Celestial Queen Mary, the local patron saint. The nation wide fame of Cartaxo’s wines is well represented on the coat of arms. The two shields refer to 'Old Portugal' (Portugal ancient) and King D.Dinis, who granted the first city rights in 1312. The golden colour of the shield is symbolizing nobility, faith, power and freedom.
António Martins-Tuválkin and Ralf Hartemink, 19 July 1999

Flag and arms published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série on 25 January 1996. The arms were officially approved on 1 March 1936 and again on 1 January 1996 because Cartaxo gained again the rank of a city on 19 June 1995.
