About the flag

It is a fairly typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a purple and yellow gyronny (city rank) background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : III Série in 1991.02.02, upon upgrade to city status in 1990.09.09, with slightly less than trivial changes in the previous, town rank, flag and arms.

The fess stands for local rivers Sousa and Vizela, the grapes for the local wine (municipality within the Vinho Verde produce region) and the bees for industry and labour.

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Wrong yellow and black flag

Dov Gutterman, 13 Jul 1999

At the Municipal website, probably also a wrong image. Our sources show a yellow and purple gyronny. I could believe that one of us made an error is it wasn’t the fact that the law on civic heraldry stipulates that the flag must be made with the colours present in the charges in the arms. And there’s nothing black in this coat of arms, except the border. And a border ain’t a charge.
Jorge Candeias, 15 Jul 1999

I’d say it’s simply an ill scanned image: the dark background pixels, though almost black, have a slight purplish tinge, which becomes evident when you set your monitor to maximum luminousity (high color bleed).
António Martins, 06 Sep 2001

Later on the official website was changed and the new version shows on its heraldry page a purple and yellow flag still wrong, but closer to the legal design — shade of purple light and bright, shade of yellow a tad orangeish.
António Martins, 20 Sep 2010

The original website archived here (a flash animation with sound effects!). The (light) purple and yellow bars at the bottom show that black was never intended to show on the flag along with yellow as the municipal colors. Nonetheless this darkly scanned image was kept online for a long time and surely many people mistook the flag to be black and yellow.

The previous, town rank, flag and arms, were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1937.05.06. It had four towers in the crown and a quartered background (town rank) and the bordure was different (though identically blazoned): The bees are all upright and placed three on the chief and one in point, while the current flag has them parallel to the edges of the bordure and four on the chief.
