Coat of arms

The arms are Azure a bend Argent semy of wavlets of the First between two sugar canes Proper (The legal wording is "sugar canes Vert", which doesn't agree with the image (would be and additional "fruited Or") and is against heraldic practice and legal prescription, with green on blue.). Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "MACHICO".
According to Sérgio Horta, this is the flag in use, upon upgrade to city status in 1996.08.02, consisting of one trivial change - the number of visible towers. I'd bet that the officialization of a new design is stalled due to the city hall's insistance of keeping the previous arms only with minor changes and the herladic authority insisting in correction of the mentioned tincture error. (But of course this error was wither perpetrated or at least sanctioned by the very same authority back in 1947…) Plain vs. gyronny for the flag may be a second issue of dissent.

Former flag

Before 1996, the mural crown had only four towers (town rank); this flag and arms were adopted and published in the official journalDiário do Governo : I Série in 1947.01.14.

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
