Canas de Senhorim Commune is one of the nine communes of Nelas Municipality (q.v.); it had 3555 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 25,66 km². It was once the seat of a separate municipality, reorganized in its current state in 1852, a change never accepted by local leaders, who kept alive a demand of municipal restoration till today. After a such movement met success in Vizela in 2002, Canas de Senhorim remains the most notable and locally supported movement for municipal (re)establishment.
