It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny of red and white (city rank).

The arms are Vert, a rabelo-ship Or with sails Argent over a base wavy Argent and Azure, ineach, dexter and sinister, chief a bunch of grapes Purpure leaved Or. Mural crown with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll with black upper case letters reading "CIDADE DO PESO DA RÉGUA".

Flag and arms adopted and published in Diário da República: III Série on 11 November 1986. Peso da Régua gained the rank of a city and became seat of a municipality on 14 August 1985
