About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Vert, in base a well Argent with two tabs, in chief a goshawk Or holding in his claws an inescutcheon Azure charged with five plates in quincunx. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: FONTINHAS"".
Meaning:
The goshawk is the local symbol of the Azores. The inescutcheon is one of the national symbols (which normally shouldn't occur in local symbols). The well building is placed on the central square and is supplying men and animals as well with water. It is a canting element. The green colour refers to the many local trees.

Fontinhas Commune is one of the 11 communes of the Praia da Vitória municipality (q.v.); it had 1594 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 17.1 km².
