Flag of Čukarica

The municipality of Čukarica, a part of the city of Belgrade, approved in 1997 the coat of arms and flag proposed in 1994 by the Serbian Heraldry Society.

The meaning of the flag is:

  • Geographical characteristics: River Sava and hilly land;
  • Industry: Shape of the border of the flag;
  • Agriculture: wheat.

There was an old proposal, from 1993, with a trefoil vert between sugar-loaf argent wrapped azure dexter and a wheat sheaf or bound gules. The design of the new coat of arms and flag was a matter of dispute between members of the Committee of Čukarica Borough Assembly. When the final voting came, the votes were divided according to the party membership, so that even those members of the Committee who voted pro as members of the Committee voted contra as members of the Assembly. However, the voting gave an overwhelming majority to the new proposed concept (with the cross, as a Christian symbol). The cross has nothing to do with the Swedish cross.
