Not to be confused with the Moldavians, the Mordovians are, like the Mari, a Finno-Ugric people. A Mordovian ASSR was created in 1934.

Description of the flag

Constitutional act No. 98/I about flag of Republic of Mordovia was accepted 30.3.1995 in Saransk:

Flag of republic has three horizontal stripes of brown-red, white and dark blue (1:2:1). In the centre is brown-red sun symbol. Proportions of flag being 1:2.

This flag, in medium blue, is listed under number 87 at the chart Flags of Aspirant Peoples [eba94] as: «Mordovia (Mordovians) [Moksha] - Central Russia.».

According to Jiri Tenora [jtn02], the sun symbol on the flag of Mordovia is divided into four parts symbolizing the four Mordovian tribes.

Constitutional act No. 92-I about coat of arms of Republic of Mordovia was accepted 30.3.1995 in Saransk:

In the centre of coat of arms is shield (brown-red, white, dark blue) with little shield of Saransk in its centre.

In the number 2/2001 of Alkukoti I found an interesting map chart [alk01] with the living areas and flags of the different Finno-Ugric peoples. It shows a simple white-red-black triband for the Erza Mordvins (one of the two related Mordvin tribes; the other one is Moksha).
