A Finno-Ugric people, the Udmurts used to be known as the Votyaks. They
came under Russian rule in the 16th century. An Autonomous Province was
organized in 1921. This became an ASSR in 1934 and in 1991 became part of the
newly created Russian Federation.
Stuart Notholt, 25 Nov 1995
The eight-rayed sun is inscribed on an imaginary square
wide 5/6ths of the width of the central,
white, stripe of the vertically three-stripped 1:2 flag.
The construction of the this device itself is self explanatory,
it consisting of five square blocks placed 1+3+1 notched
in 90°.
António Martins, 21 Jan 2000
According to Jiri Tenora [jtn02],
the sun symbol on the flag of Udmurtia is supposed to ward off fate.
Ivan Sache, 18 Apr 2002
