The flag and arms of Borovnica are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Borovnica, adopted on 1 March 2007 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 23/2007, 16 March 2007.

The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica.

The flag, in proportions 2:5, is blue with the viaduct from the coat of arms set in the first square, separated from the rest of the flag by a thin white stripe (width of the stripe is 1/32 of the flag length).
The flag prescribed for vertical hoisting has the coat of arms rotated properly.

The coat of arms of Borovnica, "Azure on a base vert a two-storied, six-arched viaduct argent", is very much based on the previous coat of arms, with a good dose of "heraldification".

The center of Borovnica is dominated by a column, that is the remains of the 500-m long masonry railway viaduct, which was considered among the greatest building achievements of the XIXth century. The coat of arms of Borovnica shows the silhouette of the former viaduct, which was bombed down in the Second World War.

According to Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05], the municipal symbols of Borovnica were already used when the current municipality was still a part of Vrhnika, from which it seceded in 1995.

The flag is light blue with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. Stanič & Jakopič show the flag in ratio 1:2 but a drawing sent by the municipal administration in May 2003 shows it with ratio ~7:10.
The former coat of arms of Borovnica shows the column, as well as the silhouette of the former viaduct described above.
