According to Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05], the flag and arms of Markovci were adopted by the Municipal Council on 16 September 1999 - but the Decision does not seem to have ever been published in any official gazette.
The flag is described as horizontal, in proportions 2:5, blue with the lion and the wheat ear from the coat of arms placed in the left square of the flag. However, on the picture, the charges are placed somewhat closer to the center of the flag.
Stanič & Jakopič neither mention nor show a vertical version of the flag. However, such a flag can be seen on a photo.
Stanič & Jakopič give the colour specifications on the HKS scale as:
- Red: 13K;
- Yellow: 3K;
- Blue: 43K.
On the municipal website, the retired teacher
Karolina Pičerko recalls that the municipality decided to adopt symbols in spring 1998. They commissioned the Heraldica Slovenica company, represented by Valt Jurečič, who acted as an expert consultant. The municipality issued a public contest in March 1999, yielding five proposals. The municipal commission asked the authors to amend their designs to make them more heraldically correct. The amended designs were then forwarded to the Municipal Council, that adopted the design proposed by Martin Kos from Nova ves, near Markovci.
The lion represents St. Mark, patron of the Markovci parish church and namesake of the place; the nine grains in the wheat ear represent the nine villages in the municipality, while the mask represents the local culture and traditions.

Coat of arms of Markovci - Image by Željko Heimer, 19 August 2000
The coat of arms of Markovci, as shown on the municipal
website can be blazoned as "Azure, a lion passant or over a fesswise wheat ear of the same
over a kurent mask or with face argent and langued gules".
Markovci is located in the region of Ptuj, well-known for the celebration of the fasnik, usually in
February, during which horrific masks with long red tongues are worn.
Such masked people are called kurenti.
