Description of the flag

According to the Thai Ministry of Interior in 2000, the flag of Chiang Rai province is vertically divided blue/purple/blue (~1:2:1) with a white elephant and the name on the province on a red label in the center of the flag.

Former flag : national flag with provincial seal in the center.

The seal of the province shows a white elephant, the royal symbol, as a reminder of the fact that Chiang Rai was founded by King Mengrai because his elephant liked the place, according to the legend.
