The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Wikipedia), which is found in Article 136 of the Constitution, is an official institution established in 1924 after the abolition of the Caliphate. Founded by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a successor to Sheikh ul-Islam, it represents the highest Islamic religious authority in the country. It is normally referred to simply as the Diyanet. As a a successor to Sheikh ul-Islam, the Diyanet is also arguably the most highest authority on Sunni Islam in the Islamic world.
