Overview

"As the legend says the town was founded in 888 by the counselor of Kyiv princes Askold and Dir whose name was Zhytomyr. In 1444 the Magdeburg Right was given by Lithuanian princes. Since 1648 it was a squadron town of Kyiv regiment. The city was the center of Volyns'ka province, and in 1918 it was the seat of the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic for several weeks."

"On the 11th of October 1991 town council session confirmed a modern emblem: in varangian shield with or border in azure field silver stone urban wall with opened or collars, crowned by three towers, middle from which more lateral, each of towers has three prong. A wall is in or decorative cartouche, over it or word "GHYTOMYR"."
