Description of the flag

The website at www.eurekawebs.com/cityhall shows the city seal has a white outer ring fimbriated gold. At the top are the words 'CITY OF EUREKA' in black block lettering, the connecting preposition being somewhat smaller than the two nouns. At each flank are two small black dots, with the word 'CALIFORNIA' in smaller black block lettering at the bottom. The central image again seems hard to distinguish, but it is a harbor scene in blue with an equally blue sky above. At the very top is the word 'Eureka' in minuscule black lettering. There also appears to be some sort of figure in the center, to the left foreground, but the entire image is too small for me to identify it.

[Editor's note: the perimeter of the seal on the flag is obviously quite different from that described here from the city website, but the details of the seal are identical.]

The image on the city seal appears to be identical to that on the California State Seal. Perhaps the fact that the state motto, Eureka, appears on the seal motivated the city in choosing to adopt the same seal.
Ned Smith, 1 October 2004

The flag consists of the seal of Eureka on a sky-blue background. The city seal is also the California State Seal.
Kathleen Franco Simmons, City Clerk of Eureka, 19 October 2004
