Timeline for City Seal:
October 10, 1988 City Council approved a motion for implementation of City Seal Contest
January 23, 1989 City Council approved a motion selecting and approving final City Seal Design
February 13, 1989 City Council approved a motion to explain the design elements in the City Seal. The motion reads in part:

"The elements of the City Seal provide a view of the community from past to present to future. The Rancho Mission Viejo brand is a symbol that has been in our area for generations and represents our heritage within these coastal hills and valleys. The light stand and lake view gives a view of our City as a unique place to live and grow. The torch indicates the spirit of accomplishment, be it in education, business, athletics or civic events."
March 27, 1989 City Council approved a motion to purchase a City Flag bearing the City Seal
September 25, 1995 City Council approved a motion to approve the colors for the City Seal. The colors are:
