Description of the flag

The current flag is listed for the City of Elkhart, Indiana. The two wavy stripes in the background represent the Elkhart and St. Joseph rivers which meet downtown. Where the rivers come together sits an island. Local legend claims the island resembles the heart of an elk, hence the city's name. Three footbridges lead to the park which houses a band shell, playground and other amenities. Every year the island is home to "Rhapsody on the Green" which is a three-day musical and craft festival.

The two rivers flow westward as the St. Joseph River. At South Bend, the river turns north and eventually empties into Lake Michigan.
