The Town

The town of Swansea (15,901 inhabitants in 2000; 6,610 ha), incorporated in 1667, is located in Bristol County, southeastern Massachusetts. In the "Herald News", 13 February 2010, Jay Pateakos reports that Swansea is the only town in southeastern Massachusetts not to have its flag hoisted in the Statehouse's Hall of Flags in Boston. the town is one of the 35 communities out of 351 not to have their flag in the Hall. A community flag can be installed in the Hall only once a year, on Flag Day, June 14.

Officials of Swansea have been asked to fill their empty pole. However, there does not seem to be any Swansea flag available. "Selectman Robert Marquis said he's been told by a number of residents that flags were spotted during the town's 1967 Tercentennial celebration, but he has yet to uncover any." Town Clark Sue Taveira said: "This town has never adopted a flag, nor have I ever seen one," she said. "If we had one, don't you think it would be here at the Town Hall?" Taveira said she's heard all the talk about the flags showing up at the Tercentennial ceremony, but those were special flags made for that event - not official flags.
