St. Mary's County is the mother county in Maryland, originally settled in 1634 following the landing of colonists on the Ark and the Dove at St. Clement's Island, although originally inhabited by the Piscataway. The county was the site of the Point Lookout Prison where many Confederate Soldiers died and presently the home of the Patuxent Naval Air Station in
Lexington Park and the Naval Air Systems Command.
The original capital of Maryland was located in St. Mary's City (which is now a historical reconstruction, similar to Williamsburg, is located in the county), before being moved to Annapolis.
