Description of the flag

The municipal flag of Columbia, Missouri is white with a square blue design resembling a view of four seated figures with outstretched arms as seen from above. In addition to being the seat of Columbia College of Missouri, the city of Columbia is also the home and main campus of the very much larger University of Missouri.

The City of Columbia has no official flag, but the City flies unofficial flag based on its logo. Here is what I received from the City:
"The City of Columbia, Missouri does not have an official flag. We do have a symbol or logo that we use on various printed materials. The logo has been used as a flag, but it is not something that has an "adoption date, official description and designer, etc." I am including information about the logo itself which is based on original artwork.

About the artwork:
City employees and citizens exist in an interwoven relationship. As a representation of this cooperative working bond, the distinctive City of Columbia logo depicts people joined together in an unending circle of community service. A solid version of the logo appears on city-owned vehicles, uniforms and correspondence as a reminder of this cooperative goal.

At this time, I do not have the name of the original artist and any official "adoption" date. We have used it so long, it will take search of our archives to find that information.

The City of Columbia's flag was created in 1988 for a flag exchange with a sister city, Matto, Japan. The flag was made by Alberta Smith, wife of former Columbia mayor Rodney Smith, in 1988.

Voting is now under way on designs for a new Columbia flag. The city's Office of Cultural Affairs held a contest to solicit designs for a new flag and received 84 entries that met the requirements. Many came from schoolchildren; others from artists and professional designers. "It's time to have a new design that is representative of the city and the community," Sarah Dresser, program specialist for the Office of Cultural Affairs, said. One of the suggestions by the Office of Cultural Affairs for those who wanted to enter the contest was that it include reference to the original logo in the previous flag.
The deadline for entering the contest was Nov. 14.
