Description of the flag

SALTILLO - A sunrise - the city's logo - graces entrance signs, business cards and even a water tower. But that could change soon. "Personally, I like the logo we've got, but it's got some age on it," said Mayor Bill Williams.

Aldermen voted Tuesday to recruit a five-member citizens' committee to gauge public opinion on whether Saltillo needs a new logo, flag, motto and color. Each alderman is charged with appointing someone. "This is really going to say something about our city and the attitude of our citizens," Williams said. "It needs to be something positive." The committee will not have final say on the project, but will make recommendations to the Board of Aldermen. The sunrise logo was developed more than 15 years ago in response to a contest sponsored by the Saltillo Men's Club, Williams said. "Students submitted their ideas and a panel of judges selected the winner," he said. "Somewhere along the way, a flag was designed, but it has since been misplaced."  At one time, the unofficial motto was "Mississippi's Brightest," said City Clerk Annette Bentley. Alderman Bill Cherry suggested the official color should be in line with Saltillo High School's - blue and white.
