Description of the flag

A photo of the flag of the Town of Southold can be seen at www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org ...in context at www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org (see the flag of the adjoining Village of Greenport).

The flag is white with the Town Seal in red, and beneath that in red upper case san serif letters the town's claim: THE OLDEST ENGLISH SPEAKING SETTLEMENT IN NEW YORK STATE (which by the way is vigorously disputed by the neighboring Town of Southampton... see the seal on the Southampton flag: FIRST ENGLISH SETTLEMENT IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK).

An image of the Southold town seal can be seen at the Town's homepage at southoldtown.northfork.net/index.htm. It is red on white with a braided outer ring; the words TOWN OF SOUTHOLD SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK in sans serif uppercase letters and a cross patée arranged in a circle within the braiding; and within that a red disk bearing a white pound (£) sign.

Along with the flag of Southold, the above-referenced photo at www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org/new_page_11.htm also shows the flag of Greenport, an incorporated village within the Town. This white-on-green version differs from the green-on-white version. That shows a 2004 photo of the green-on-white flag- the photo with the Southold flag and the white-on-green Greenport flag was from 2005. I don't know if it is a case of the flag being revised, or if the village uses both versions.
