Description of the flag

Springfield is unincorporated community in Fairfax county, Virginia, USA, with more then 30,000 people. More about community in Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield,_Virginia and Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce www.springfieldchamber.org.

The flag is shown and explained at www.springfieldchamber.org/gscc/main/springfieldchamber.nsf/content/flag. Here is the story:

"In January 2008 a contest was held among K-12 students in the Greater Springfield area to select a design for a community flag. 83 entries were received with the winning design submitted by Matthew Tiemann of Lake Braddock Secondary School. Matthew received a $1,000.00 college scholarship from the Chamber.

The flag's elements & symbolism include:

  • Center white outline: official Virginia Commonwealth's symbol – Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly; cross roads; interchange of 3 major highways
  • Encircling blue field: Greater Springfield area/sphere of influence; identifying 300-year-old area as a gateway, connector & destination
  • Colors: Blue - fidelity, Virginia's & Fairfax County's flags' predominant background color; green - suburban landscape; white – purity
